Two Islands, One Unforgettable Experience
Koh Phi Phi Don
Phi Phi Don is the heart of the island group, and the only inhabited island. It’s a narrow strip of land between Tonsai Bay and Loh Dalum Bay, just 100 metres wide at its slimmest point. This is where you’ll find the main pier, welcoming ferries and dive boats arriving from Krabi and Phuket.
Tonsai Bay is the energetic centre of the island, lined with dive centres, cafés, restaurants, tour shops, and local businesses. In contrast, Loh Dalum Bay offers a more peaceful setting, with calm, shallow waters that are perfect for swimming and relaxing on the beach.
With no cars or motorbikes (aside from a few essential service vehicles), Phi Phi Don has a uniquely laid-back charm. Everything is within walking distance, and the island vibe is easygoing, friendly, and truly one of a kind.
Koh Phi Phi Leh
Just a short boat ride south lies Phi Phi Leh, an uninhabited island best known for the world-famous Maya Bay, made famous by the film The Beach. It’s an essential stop for visitors, and the best times to visit are early morning or late afternoon when the crowds thin out.
Phi Phi Leh and the nearby Bida Islands are also home to many of the area’s top dive sites. With vibrant coral reefs and rich marine biodiversity, it’s no surprise these sites are internationally known among divers.
To the north of Phi Phi Don are two more islands in the group, Bamboo Island (Koh Mai Pai) and Mosquito Island (Koh Yung). Bamboo Island is a snorkelling hotspot, while Mosquito Island is currently closed to support coral restoration efforts by the Thai National Parks.

Seasons in Phi Phi
Dry Season (High Season): November to April
- This is the most popular time to visit, with clear blue skies, calm seas, and plenty of sunshine. A gentle ocean breeze keeps things comfortable in the evenings, making it ideal for diving, beach days, and boat trips.
Green Season (Low Season): May to October
- Expect a more laid-back vibe, cooler temperatures, and fewer crowds. The weather often brings sunshine mixed with brief, refreshing rain showers, typically in the early morning or evening. Many days still offer perfect diving conditions.
Thanks to its location in the open sea and the shelter of nearby Phuket, Koh Phi Phi receives less rainfall than the mainland. The island’s position behind Phang Nga Bay protects it from heavy winds and waves, meaning diving is possible year-round. No matter the season, there’s always a calm, clear side to explore, and great visibility can occur at any time of year.
How to Get to Koh Phi Phi
The only way to reach Koh Phi Phi is by boat, but getting here is easier than you might think. Ferries and speedboats run daily from Phuket, Krabi, and Koh Lanta, with both towns served by international airports.
Travelling to Koh Phi Phi
From Krabi
The journey from Krabi Airport to the ferry terminal takes about 15 minutes by taxi or shared minivan, which can be arranged easily upon arrival. Ferries to Phi Phi typically depart at 9:00am, 10:30am, 1:30pm, and 3:00pm. Tickets are available at the pier or as part of a combined airport transfer package.
From Phuket
From Phuket Airport, allow about 1 hour to reach the ferry terminal. While boats start running from 8:30am, we recommend choosing the 11:00am, 1:30pm, or 3:00pm ferries, which travel directly to Phi Phi Don.
Other Islands
It’s also possible to travel to Phi Phi from other nearby islands such as Koh Lanta or Koh Lipe, though schedules may vary depending on the season. Your hotel or a local tour agent can provide the most up-to-date options.
